Wales beats Georgia 1-0 in World Cup qualifying

Wales beats Georgia 1-0 in World Cup qualifying

Tom Lawrence's superb first global goal gave Wales a crucial 1-0 away win over Georgia as its bid to qualify for the FIFA World Cup was boosted despite the absence of injured talisman Gareth Bale.

Georgia remain without a win in the group and coach Vladimir Weiss said injuries had taken its toll on his young side.

If the Serbs fail to beat Austria, they can clinch qualification with a win at home to Georgia on Monday.

La Sexta's Jugones programme spoke to Gareth Bale's Spanish teacher and asked how the Real Madrid player was advancing with the language. They've been good at times but they're not at our level.

"Obviously, you're missing a world-class player and the team's talisman, but sometimes that can bring the lads together and it won't be the first time they've coped without him".

It's an all-too familiar story for the 28-year-old, who could be about for a month with his latest injury.

With no margin for error, Wales has steadied the campaign with wins over Austria and Moldova, but now comes a defining week: at Georgia on Friday and then a group-ending home match against Ireland on Monday. It is predicted that Georgia has more chance to win this game today.

Catalonia will declare independence within days, regional leader says
Catalan authorities said 90% of voters in Sunday's referendum backed a split from Madrid - but turnout was only 42%. The regional cabinet will "demand the withdrawal of all police units deployed in Catalonia", Puigdemont said.

Red Sox infielder carried off the field by manager John Farrell
When Price returned from his latest malady in mid-September, the Red Sox made a decision to try something different. Houston will counter with its pitching rotation which was boosted by the acquisition of Justin Verlander midseason.

Rockies' Jon Gray says he's ready for D-backs' challenge
Zack Greinke , Wednesday's starter, did not pitch well down the stretch, and Goldschmidt ended the season in an 0-for-17 skid. Blackmon set a major league record with 103 RBI's from the leadoff position and Arenado produced another 130-plus RBI season.

Coleman was understandably delighted with the result but especially pleased for Lawrence.

"I'm delighted for Tom, he deserves it", Coleman said.

"The Moldova game was very different to the Austria one, they sat deep and made it hard for us, but we got the win in the end. A point maybe okay, but we'll go for three points - that's the way it's set up". Tom went off in Moldova for Ben and he set up the goal, so it was about him again. His job was with possession and without possession and he absolutely nailed it.

Williams also praised their match-winner Lawrence, it was the Derby striker's first global goal and came in his ninth appearance. Receiving the ball from Ramsey around 30 yards from goal, he sidestepped a challenge and unleashed an angled drive from just outside the area that found the far corner after a touch from Giorgi Loria, the Georgia goalkeeper. I know the opposition will be different and it will be tight but if we create clear-cut chances, a percentage have got to be good.

The only goal of a tight affair came just four minutes into the second half courtesy of Derby County's wide man Lawrence, who bagged his first ever in a Wales shirt.

"Let's get one thing straight".

Wales were ninth-best going into the match in Tbilisi but victory lifted them to sixth in that complex table. "I think he's one of the best midfielders in Europe, I really do. But it will be a great occasion and hopefully we can do it with one last push". We've got to bring our A game.
