Venus zooms into US Open semi-finals

Venus zooms into US Open semi-finals

Williams has won seven Grand Slam titles in her career, the most recent being Wimbledon in 2008.

The roof was closed as drops of rain started to fall and, after that brief interruption, Kvitova saved two break points before levelling the tie with a big first serve that Williams returned long.

But it's her name - not those of her siblings or parents - that will go on that plaque and in the history books.

Despite being taken out, it the world No. 14 can take great heart from her displays in NY, which comes just nine months after being the victim of a knife attack in her home.

"For me, I am focused on myself and trying to be aggressive as possible", Williams said.

In her 19th US Open and in her 76th appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam event - which is a record for the Open era - Williams faces a semi-final on Thursday against 24-year-old Sloane Stephens, who as a black American has always been considered a natural successor to the Williams sisters.

After final defeats at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, the 37-year-old finds herself within two victories of a first grand slam title on home soil since 2001. At Wimbledon, she said, "Yeah, sometimes, when I'm really thinking about it, I got a little weird inside".

"Reflecting back on the week, I can be happy", Sharapova said. Tomorrow, Coco Vandeweghe will take on Pliskova and Keys will face Kanepi to see whether the American dream can continue.

"I think that she's playing incredible on the Majors this year". Kvitova especially dominated on the forehand, hitting 12 such winners to just two for Muguruza.

Invest 93L has become better organized in the past day or so, and it's expected to grow and intensify this week. It will be mostly sunny with a high near 91 and heat index values, or a "feels like" temperature, of about 102.

With the Ashe crowd behind her in the final set tiebreak, Williams willed her way to a 5-1 lead and when Kvitova sailed a return wide for 6-2, the American sealed the victory.

Venus will face compatriot Sloane Stephens in the semi-final.

The 2000 and 2001 U.S. Open champion continued to serve nearly perfectly and pocketed the opening set when Kvitova, who hit 16 unforced errors, returned long.

Williams reached this year's Wimbledon final before falling to Muguruza.

American Sloane Stephens also reached the quarterfinals by prevailing 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 over 30th-seeded German Julia Goerges.

Carreno Busta broke at love to open the match and again to lead 5-2 on the way to taking the first set in 38 minutes.

Stephens beat No. 16 Anastasija Sevastova in the quarterfinals Tuesday, and she and Williams will play each other Thursday.

If there were ever a match that deserved two winners, it was Tuesday night's contest between Venus Williams and Petra Kvitova in the quarter-finals of the US Open.
