Richard Branson Reveals Destruction to His Private Island by Hurricane Irma

Several British soldiers were deployed to these Caribbean islands to provide security after the large group of prisoners has escaped from a prison during Hurricane Irma.

Richard was writing from Puerto Rico, where he said he is mobilising aid efforts and rebuilding plans for the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and the wider Caribbean.

The news comes after British Virgin Islanders said they were "terrified" of the prisoners, who made a run for it during the chaos caused by the hurricane.

At least 27 people are reported to have died after the powerful hurricane hit several islands in the Caribbean over the past few days.

But there has seen severe damage to airports, roads and buildings on many islands.

"Governments - the United Kingdom in the British Virgin Islands, the US in the US Virgin Islands - need to do all they can to help people here who have lost their homes and in many cases will have lost their livelihoods after the storm", Branson wrote in his blog.

Johnson said three planes would be flying to the region on Sunday to support the relief effort, while 500 troops were already in the area hit by Irma.

Multimillion-dollar homes have been reduced to piles of twisted rubble, trees were stripped of their lush foliage and boats and cars were strewn across the island like broken toys. Resorts have been decimated.

Natalie Drury, a resident of the British Virgin Islands, told the Guardian: "I can't believe my eyes".

Irma caused about $13 billion in destruction across the Caribbean before it hit the USA, according to an estimate from the Germany-based Center for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction Technology, a damage assessor, which would make it the most expensive storm in the region's history.

But speaking on the BBC, Mr Johnson defended the government's actions. "It's not easy here", she said, adding that the Dutch marines and police force were doing their best to cope with the situation.

May also announced the government would be increasing the relief fund for British Overseas Territories left devastated by Irma from £12m to £32m.
