New Nissan Leaf electric vehicle to have 400km range

New Nissan Leaf electric vehicle to have 400km range

Now we've been wanting the Nissan Leaf to come to India ever since the Indian government has made a decision to switch to electric vehicles by 2030.

For much of the motoring public, electric vehicles remain something of an exotic technology that carmakers are doubling down on EVs as the automotive landscape continues to change. Power is increased by 38 per cent compared with the outgoing model, to 110kW, while torque is up by 26 per cent to 320Nm.

What's interesting is Nissan plans on introducing a more powerful Leaf with more battery capacity in 2019 with the launch of its new EV platform.

Projector beam headlights with dual, direct-lens low and high beams are a first for Nissan, while the rear of the new Leaf has a signature design with combination headlights and a spoiler integrated into the window graphics. Its green credentials quickly shot past hybrid pioneers like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, going on to become the globe's best selling electric vehicle. The Leaf became the world's biggest-selling, all-battery vehicle, with more than 280,000 units sold.

The electric Leaf for 2018 will also be the first auto in the Nissan lineup to offer ProPilot Assist, a feature that combines adaptive cruise control with lane centering for single-lane highway driving. The new Nissan Leaf will also come with ProPILOT Park however, and it will be the first vehicle in Nissan's portfolio to do so, though again, Nissan hasn't confirmed if this will be as standard or an option. The company is characterizing it as an approximate 40 percent improvement from up to 280 kilometers or 107 miles for Leaf models on sale now. The new Leaf will also have have single-pedal driving capability, a major feature of GM's Bolt.

This new Leaf looks and feels like a larger vehicle now even though it is only a bit longer, wider and lower and on the same platform as the current one.

"We are confident that we will at least double or even triple sales volumes in Japan", said Nissan senior Japanese marketing and sales division VP Asoko Hoshino.

But the really clever function is the new Nissan Leaf's e-Pedal, insists the Japanese company.

I love my used Nissan Leaf, and in the two or so years I've been driving it, I've rarely had a real world issue with "range anxiety" or running out of juice to get home.

ProPILOT Park can control steering, acceleration, braking and gear selection to automatically guide the vehicle into a parking spot.

That bigger battery supplies power to a brawnier motor, too.

ProPilot is accompanied by the ePedal, a smart accelerator that essentially lets you do gesture control with the pedal. The spongy throttle response of the old vehicle has been swapped for something sharper, and the motor's additional punch means you're genuinely pressed back into the seat as the Leaf surges forward in the typically unbroken manner of an EV.

The overall design is more aggressive than the model it will replace and is inspired by the new-gen Nissan Micra. Interior space should be more generous even though the new Leaf's 2700mm wheelbase equals the Mazda, down to the packaging benefits of the car's low-profile battery pack -sited beneath the front seats in the centre of the chassis - and the absence of a fuel tank or exhaust pipes.

The 2018 Nissan Leaf will arrive at global dealerships later this year.
