Irma's flooding rainfall, tornado threat to eye Alabama to South Carolina, Tennessee

On Saturday morning, Irma's forecast track showed her striking the western side of Florida and riding up through west Georgia.

SC ordered evacuations of Hilton Head Island and six other barrier islands.

People in potentially vulnerable areas should review personal safety plans, become familiar with local evacuation zones in coastal counties, and locate the nearest hurricane evacuation routes.

The barrier islands are located in the counties of Colleton, Beaufort and Jasper, and only residents who reside on the islands are included in the mandatory evacuation, McMaster said. "SC and western North Carolina are projected to receive 3" to 6" of rain when the storm reaches the region. Predictions now suggest that the eye of the hurricane is growing stronger as it moves over the water.

The track of Hurricane Irma is still uncertain.

"As you can tell this is a serious storm", says Gov. McMaster, "Fortunately it's not hitting us like we thought it might".

McMaster said he is awaiting the next update from the National Hurricane Center.

The Fort Sumter National Monument marks the spot where the first shots were fired in the Civil War in 1861.

The executive order also authorized up to 5,000 Georgia National Guard members to be on state active duty to support Hurricane Irma response and recovery.

GEMA/HS is coordinating disaster preparedness efforts along with the Georgia Department of Defense (GA DoD), the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Georgia Department of Public Safety.
