Coastal Storm Bringing Rain & Wind to NC Coast

The system is still not a tropical cyclone and the chances for the system to become a tropical cyclone appear to be decreasing.

In addition to a Tropical Storm Warning, a Tropical Storm Watch is in place for south of Surf City to the South Santee River. Harvey brought catastrophic flooding to Texas.

As of this writing, rain is already spreading northward through the Garden State, with heavier rain expected later on.

The next possible tropical storm is off the coast of North Carolina and what the National Hurricane Center is now calling "Potential Tropical Storm Ten". Winds within that area of low pressure already have speeds of 35 miles per hour.

Going the distance: Bus tour travels for best view of upcoming eclipse

There is a flash flood watch issued in several counties including Cumberland, Edgecombe, Harnett and Johnston, from 5 p.m. As of 8 a.m., the disturbance was stationary. In addition, a wind advisory has been issued for numerous same counties. Still, gusty winds may make driving hard at times, especially as it further lowers visibility in areas of rain.

If this disturbance develops into a tropical storm as expected, it will be Irma. Before then, the rain should die down somewhat, allowing for a slow improving trend across areas like Houston and others impacted by major flooding.

Sunday night: Heavy rain and gusty winds are possible from South Florida into coastal Georgia and the southern coast of SC. The wording may seem elaborate, but it means that this disturbance could become a tropical storm very soon. As always, there's the chance we could see a very risky storm come our way before the season is over - remember, Hugo, the Historic Floods of 2015 and Hurricane Matthew all occurred in October. Forecasters also expect hazardous surf, swells and strong wind with this storm. Heavy rain is possible over portions of the northwestern Cabo Verde Islands for a few more hours. And isolated or scattered power outages and property damage will be possible too. Anywhere from 2 inches to 6 inches is possible, with locally higher amount.
