President Donald Trump is taking to Twitter denounce reports that the Russian Federation investigation is widening to examine whether he tried to obstruct justice.

If "the man" in the tweet is, in fact, Rosenstein - as one person who recently spoke to Trump told CNN - Trump's anger marks a whopper of a turnaround on the same man he and other senior White House officials praised effusively just weeks ago.

"He's being investigated for taking the action that the attorney general and deputy attorney general recommended him to take by the agency who recommended the terminations!"

Trump "believes that he has the power to fire anyone in government he chooses and for any reason", said Representative Adam Schiff, whose committee is also investigating Russia-Trump ties.

The lawyer, Jay Sekulow, contended the tweet was not a confirmation of the investigation, but instead a response to a report in The Washington Post.

If Trump ordered Brand to fire Mueller and she refused, the responsibility to oversee the special counsel would fall to Dana Boente, the US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, according to a presidential executive order.

"Failure to follow these protocols could result in criminal or civil penalties, and could form the basis of legal claims, legal presumptions, or jury instructions relating to spoliation of evidence", the memo warns former Trump transition team members.
