Northam Beats Perriello in Virginia Democratic Gubernatorial Primary

Republican candidate for governor, Ed Gillespie (R) talks with Republican Lt. Gov. candidate Glenn Davis (L) at a polling place on June 13, 2017 in Richmond, Virginia. Now the most interesting cleavage may be on the Republican side where white identity politics found traction in Virginia and may in other states.

On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam is on track to win the nomination for Virginia governor, CNN has projected. That is to say, the number or Republicans who came out to vote in today's primary (363K) was dwarfed by the turnout during the 2016 Primary when Trump won with 356K votes with a total of over 1 million Republicans coming out.

Justin Fairfax, an attorney from northern Virginia, won the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.

In his victory speech, Gillespie tried to play peacemaker and asked Stewart supporters to get behind him for the general election. Because you all said it couldn't be done. Looking at county-level maps of the two races, Perriello's campaign manager, Brennan Gilmore, noted that his candidate-whose old congressional district included a rural area around Charlottesville-won numerous same interior counties as Stewart.

The gubernatorial race in Virginia, the only state other than New Jersey electing a new governor this year, is seen as a key test of Trump's popularity ahead of the 2018 mid-term elections for the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

This morning, I woke up, showered, walked my dog, then drove to the local high school to vote in Virginia's primary election.

That's part of what concerns Gillespie supporters in Prince William like Supervisor Marty Nohe, R-Coles.

"Nobody's excited about Ed", he said.

Gillespie dominated his challengers in fundraising efforts.

"We have an incredible slate of diverse candidates", rising second-year College student Virginia Chambers, University Democrats spokesperson, said. It remains to be seen if the results will clear that margin. "As delegate, I will hold him accountable for his actions".

The commander-in-chief then posted a third tweet , writing "Congratulations to Karen Handel on her big win in Georgia 6th". Later on Twitter, Ossoff wrote that for months the district "has been a beacon of hope for people across the country".

Portugal and Mexico draw 2-2 in Confederations Cup
A Portugal roster led by Cristiano Ronaldo awaits El Tri . "I would like to say something on behalf of my players". Despite the disappointing end with Moreno's goal, Santos believes a draw was a fair result.

Wife of alleged Virginia shooter: 'I can't believe he did this'
Before James Hodgkinson left his home in Belleville, Ill ., in March, he sold almost everything he owned from his businesses. Posts from previous year show he was adamantly opposed to Clinton, and, after the election, to President Donald Trump .

Northam easily defeated former Congressman Tom Perriello in a race that polls had suggested was a dead heat before Northam racked up a slew of last-minute endorsements, including a highly coveted one from The Washington Post.

Perriello nonetheless drew major support from the Sanders wing of the party, and coverage of the race often cast it as a fight between the Democratic progressive and centrist wings. Voters in November will choose between incumbent Mark Herring or Republican John Adams, a partner at the Richmond law firm McGuireWoods. We have come a long way.

Northam stressed his pragmatic approach and ability to work with Republicans, while Perriello - who made a surprise entrance into the race in January - ran a more liberal campaign, promising to raise taxes on the wealthy to pay for social programs.

Hyun Lee, 37, of Centreville, who had done phone banking and knocked on doors for Northam, was one of the people at the party.

"If I am entrusted with governorship of the Commonwealth we love, I will be an ethical, honest, hard-working, principled Governor", Gillespie continued. "He cares for everyone".

Fairfax beat longtime party activist and former lobbyist Susan Platt and former federal prosecutor Gene Rossi in Tuesday's primary.

Many voters, though, flocked to Northam because of his experience in the General Assembly as a state senator and lieutenant governor.

Interestingly, though, neither Northam nor Perriello is as true-blue Democrat as the campaign might have led voters to believe.

Perriello says that his skills as peace negotiator, serving as president Obama's special envoy to the Great Lakes region of Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo, makes him uniquely suited to listen to people and bring them together in what he calls a "Bobby Kennedy style coalition".
