England seal semi-final spot

Mark Wood took the key wicket of Kane Williamson as England booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy with an 87-run win over New Zealand at Cardiff on Tuesday.

New Zealand's Champions Trophy cricket campaign took hefty blow as they were soundly beaten by England by 87 runs in Cardiff.

"And Australia are one of the best teams - they always are in a white ball tournament". Liam Plunkett bowled emerged as the leader of the pack as he gobbled up four wickets and broke the back of the Kiwis batting order.

Williamson moved to his 50 off 66 balls but then started moving, belting Rashid over the top and pulling and driving as Stokes went for 11 off an expensive over.

After two wickets falling early, Williamson (87 off 98, 8 fours), along with experienced Ross Taylor (39 off 59, 3 fours) did put their side under control of the run chase.

No other batsman could make any significant contribution. The hosts batted first and posted a challenging 310 on the board with the likes of Joe Root, Alex Hales and Jos Buttler scoring half centuries.

New Zealand, who saw pacemen Corey Anderson (three for 55) and Adam Milne (three for 79) share six wickets, fought back well with the ball.

Adil Rashid (12) fell lbw to Santner despite reviewing the umpire's initial decision but thankfully for England Buttler found a steady partner at last in Liam Plunkett.

Jos Buttler pulls a delivery during his unbeaten innings of 61 off 48 balls to help push England past 300.

From superwoman to Wonder Woman
The main problem with " Wonder Woman " is that, aside from its powerhouse lead character, we've seen nearly all of this before. Diana was depicted as a nebbishly girl whose prickly mother anxious she was going to become an old maid.

But England were accomplished in the field and will return to Sofia Gardens in a weeks' time for a semi-final showdown after a second successive win ensured they will finish top of Group A. However, New Zealand had a daunting task of needing 155 runs in the final 20 overs.

During the recent series with South Africa, we saw how risky cross-seam can be, with the ball skidding through off the shiny side, and bouncing up if it hits the seam.

Morgan, asked if the players could concentrate on the job at hand, cited the way England had defeated South Africa in a bilateral series ODI in Leeds just two days after the Manchester attack as evidence they could do that.

Hales departed just when he was looking good and timing the ball well.

After Moeen Ali fell to a sharp catch at backward square-leg off Anderson, a third wicket for the addition of 42 in seven overs meant England still could not press the button.

The latter soon made up for his swift departure with an instant result in the opening over of the New Zealand innings. Luke Ronchi barely had time to take his stance as Ball knocked his stumps over on Ronchi's first delivery.

"We thought there was no value in full (bowling), so we used a lot of cross-seamers and cutters into the wicket".
