Trump calls Canada's dairy trade policies a 'disgrace'

On lumber, cheaper Canadian wood has reduced the cost of USA homes but also caused recurring legal spats with the US industry that alleges product-dumping.

U.S. President Donald Trump took fresh aim at Canada on Thursday, but expanded his hit list to beyond dairy to include lumber and energy.

"My position on trade has been closer to President Trump, than it was to President Obama or President Bush", Schumer said.

Weins, who did not offer any advice on renegotiating NAFTA given Trump's insistence upon changing the trade rules, says the problems facing USA dairy farmers were all created by overproduction. Following that meeting, Trump said he only wanted to "tweak" the US relationship with Canada under NAFTA. Canada imposed an import tax on filtered milk, which had previously been duty free, after the country's dairy farmers complained about USA imports.

Dairy farms throughout NY state rely heavily on exporting this product, and they are faced with millions of dollars in losses each year.

And the prime minister says he will continue to protect Canada's agriculture producers, including the supply management system, as he tries to engage in "fact-based" conversation with the USA administration on a variety of trade irritants.

"The Americans ... have overproduced in their country, and therein lies the problem".

In New Zealand, the world's largest dairy exporter, Federated Farmers dairy industry group chairman Andrew Hoggard told ABC Rural Canada needed to open up its domestic market if it wanted to keep exporting to other countries.

Shakespeare: Leicester future not in my hands…
It was a rare alarm for Atletico in the first half though as their ability to retain possession drew Leicester's sting. They'll be tough opponents in the semi-finals but I don't see any reason why they can not win it.

Relations with the USA are crucial as more than 75 percent of Canada's exports go to the US, while 18 percent of US exports go to Canada. US companies had, until recently, supplied Canadian customers during periods of relatively tight supplies and when production increased.

Canada is not the problem.

Poor results in the US dairy sector are due to USA and global dairy overproduction, he writes.

Tuesday, in a speech to Wisconsin workers, he singled out the dairy industry as a prime example of that disaster, saying that Canada's supply management system, where government regulations ensure that the supply never exceeds the demand, amounts to a "one-sided deal" that benefits only Canada.

"We going to have to get to the negotiating table with Canada, very, very quickly", the President said in the Oval Office.

"I will continue to defend supply management because it works for our farmers, it works for our agricultural industry and it works for Canadians", said Justin Trudeau.

A request for comment to the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa was not returned Thursday. He suggested it has stalled his attempt to renegotiate NAFTA. "NAFTA has been very, very bad for our country", Trump said. "And we're going to call Canada and ask what's happening and they might give us an answer but we're going to get the solutions and not just the answer ok?" said Trump. He also criticized recent pricing changes for dairy ingredients in Canada for making USA imports less competitive and costing Americans revenue and jobs.
