"Night To Shine" prom returns to Mount Olive

The Cuyahoga Valley Church is one of eight churches in Northeast Ohio that hosted a prom for people with special needs Friday night. Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Centennial was one of those churches.

In all, over 350 churches around the world held Night to Shine proms.

As cameras flashed and clicked, a group of special people dressed to the nines got the red carpet treatment Friday night at Smithsburg Valley Church.

Night to Shine was funded by the Tim Tebow Foundation and hosted by Augustana Lutheran Church of Midway Township. "I feel so blessed in my career, that it's good to give back", she said.

Invitations to the event were sent out months in advance and 45 guests pre-registered.

After the DJ asked the 99 guests and their buddies, "are you ready to dance?" Changing Valentine's Day weekend from simply a celebration of love, to a celebration of God's love, for people with special needs.

The ideal amount of volunteers for an event of this magnitude is over 100 so that individual attention can be given to each attendee. She said it's all about making up for missed opportunities. A former National Football League quarterback and Heisman victor from Florida helped put together a special event in Columbus for people that may not go to their school's prom.

Their sons, Trent, 21 and Ben, 20 were at last year's prom while their younger brother, Elon, 16, was a first-timer. "I want to do it every year, and every year will be bigger and better".

Families of the prom attendees were also invited and had a respite room they could duck into for a few minutes of the prom, he said.

Last year, about 250 guests went to the Northern Colorado prom, Glover said, and this year he expected nearly 400.
