Betsy DeVos' Crucial Senate Confirmation Vote

Betsy DeVos' Crucial Senate Confirmation Vote

Betsy DeVos, President Trump's pick to be the next Secretary of Education, testifies during her confirmation hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee last month.

A procedural vote on the DeVos nomination will be held today with the confirmation vote scheduled for tomorrow.

Murkowski said she believed DeVos, a billionaire Republican donor and school choice activist, has much to learn about public education.

Two Republicans have said they will vote against DeVos, which would result in a 50-50 tie that would leave the deciding vote to Vice President Mike Pence.

One critical reason why DeVos is up before Sessions is they need his vote as an Alabama senator in order to confirm her.

A number of protestors gathered outside Fisher's Omaha office this weekend, asking the senator to vote against DeVos' nomination. But Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the DeVos nomination is a special case.

It doesn't appear likely that another Republican will break ranks, however. These Democrats include Sen.

Since Democrats lost their ability to filibuster presidential cabinet nominees, now they'll just talk. Cornyn added that Democrats are giving in to the "irrational rage being depicted in some quarters". The majority have been against DeVos, according to the senator. That would leave the school choice advocate with 50 votes in her favor and 50 against. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said Monday.

Supporters say DeVos is just the person needed to disrupt the education system and focus more on what's best for children and parents, rather than maintaining a federal bureaucracy. "This nomination is dead even right now - on the razor's edge". She has received strong support from establishment Republicans like Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney, as well as a handful of Democrats who work in education reform causes.

With this same common sense in mind, why choose someone like Betsy DeVos who has zero experience with public schools and brings nothing but polemics to the job?

Public concern over DeVos has also reached unprecedented levels. Dean Heller, R-Nevada, last week multiple times and could not get through. The only thing clear is who loses in that scenario - our state's children.

"Frankly, Ms. Devos' answers at the hearing were embarrassing", Sen.

"But we're not sure he's actually heard us yet", Burnett said.
