Actress Mary Tyler Moore dies at age 80, publicist says

Mary Tyler Moore, the vivacious co-star of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and star of the equally-celebrated, eponymous CBS sitcom, has died at the age of 80.

They called her America's TV sweetheart, and perhaps that's a fitting way to remember Moore, who died at 80 on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at a hospital in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Her dancer legs led to her being cast as Sam, the sexy answering service girl, on the TV show "Richard Diamond, Private Detective "in 1957".

She also made a point of her character wearing outfits on the show a couple of times, just as women do in real life.

She won seven Emmy awards over the years and was nominated for an Oscar for her 1980 portrayal of an affluent mother whose son is accidentally killed in "Ordinary People".

She also was willing to lend her stardom to what she considered a good cause, as she did with a 2001 guest appearance on The Ellen Show, comedian Ellen DeGeneres' short-lived sitcom follow-up to Ellen, in which her character was established as a lesbian from the beginning.

The Brooklyn native began her career on commercials, most notably as a Hotpoint elf in appliance ads that aired during "Ozzie and Harriet" episodes in the mid-1950s.

Or watch as the realization of what is happening in "Dick Van Dyke's" enduring "That's My Baby" episode plays over the face of Laura Petrie.

"She was flawless - ideal!" "They used [the] term 'cupping under.' And I can only assume that that meant my, you know, my seat-that there was a little too much definition", she recalled. She was completely natural.

But make no mistake, Mary Tyler Moore left behind a legacy of significance. But the chemistry was there right from the start. Created by Carl Reiner, it was a look at the professional and domestic life of Rob Petrie, the head writer for a fictional TV variety show.

Moore's career temporarily stalled.

"There are no words", wrote her costar Dick Van Dyke on Twitter. "I grabbed the top of her head, walked her down the hall to our executive producer's office and said, 'I found her"'.

The 1970 special was an vast hit, and it reminded CBS of her star quality. She got it like that.

The show spawned three spinoffs, Rhoda, Phyllis and Lou Grant. But I think we broke new ground, and that was helped by my insistence on wearing trousers, you know, jeans and capri trousers at the time because I said I've seen all the other actresses and they're always running the vacuum in these little flowered frocks with high heels on, and I don't do that. Audiences thought Mary Richards was a loser for being unmarried at 30. But it will also show you an actor who was at once a comic genius and the most grounded of performers. Months later, spotted themselves in the opening credits of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". Other MTM Enterprises shows included "Hill Street Blues", "The Bob Newhart Show" and "St. Elsewhere".

Moore had struggled with diabetes for some 40 years and six years ago she had surgery to remove a benign tumour on her brain lining.

Mary Richards may not be an icon to younger viewers who grew up wanting to sip cosmopolitans with Carrie Bradshaw or vanquish vampires alongside Buffy Summers.

But he didn't. He loved Mary.
