Mary Tyler Moore, the vivacious co-star of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and star of the equally-celebrated, eponymous CBS sitcom, has died at the age of 80.

Moore's career temporarily stalled.

"There are no words", wrote her costar Dick Van Dyke on Twitter. "I grabbed the top of her head, walked her down the hall to our executive producer's office and said, 'I found her"'.

The 1970 special was an vast hit, and it reminded CBS of her star quality. She got it like that.

The show spawned three spinoffs, Rhoda, Phyllis and Lou Grant. But I think we broke new ground, and that was helped by my insistence on wearing trousers, you know, jeans and capri trousers at the time because I said I've seen all the other actresses and they're always running the vacuum in these little flowered frocks with high heels on, and I don't do that.
